A large part of the Indian population remains unaware about the need to plan a family. Anwar belongs to one of the millions of families in Bihar. There are five sisters and four brothers in the family. Four of the sisters have been married off and the youngest one is also of marriageable age. The family being very poor, Anwar set off to Punjab to earn some money so that his youngest sister could be married off. When he reached Amritsar he had only Rs. 20 in his pocket and was desperate to find a job. He had some experience of working as a cook and was looking for a similar job. After a few queries he was told about a vacancy for a cook about 20 Kms. away at a wayside Dhaba. He immediately boarded a bus for the said place. The fare came out to be Rs.12 and that left him with Rs. 8 in his pocket. As the bus was approaching the wayside Dhaba, he requested the Bus conductor to stop the bus but the Conductor refused to stop the bus as it was still some distance away from the scheduled stop.
Anwar did not
have enough money to hire a rickshaw from the main bus stop to the
wayside Dhaba so he decided to alight from the moving bus. He moved
to the front door and as the bus slowed down he jumped out of the
bus. Unfortunately for him the bus accelerated as he jumped out and
no one tried to stop him from jumping out of the bus. As he rolled
down on the road his right foot came under the rear wheel of the bus
and all the bones Some kindly soul brought him to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, Amritsar where he was operated upon, but his problems started multiplying. He had no money for medicines or clothes, there was no one to help him to the toilet as he was unable to move by himself and he refused to eat the left-overs and was starving. He was in a most depressed state of mind and without a clue as to what to do. Once again some one told him that the only place where all his requirements could be met was Pingalwara. Somehow he managed a rickshaw and reached Pingalwara. His mental and physical state required no explanation and was immediately taken into the folds of the institution.
With the
medical help and care his condition started improving. All the bones
of his right foot were crushed so badly that these could not be put
into any shape. It took him 7 months to be able to recover and start
moving with the help of crutches.
He feels sorry that he has been maimed for life but is still hopeful. Smilingly he has boarded a train to rejoin his family.

were crushed. The bus stopped briefly to see that he was still alive
and moved off leaving him on the roadside.
